UCF Caribbean protests during speech Van Rij on slavery apologies

Statians calling attention to atrocities taking place today (December 21, 2022)

ST. EUSTATIUS--A town hall meeting was held Monday following Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte formally apologising for the Netherlands’ role in the atrocities that were committed against enslaved people. A panel that included State Secretary of Finance Marnix van Rij, Government Commissioner Alida Francis and Island Commissioners Glenville Schmidt and Derick Simmons led discussions in a packed room at Mike van Putten Youth Centre/Lion’s Den.



 

 

 
 

 

 

 

 

 

Many people from all walks of life in St. Eustatius and from abroad gave their opinions and personal experiences with discrimination and racism they are still facing today in the Caribbean, Suriname and in the Netherlands itself. A protest was also presented by Ubuntu Connected Front (UCF) Caribbean.
